Training

Two training packages have been developed for local government staff. This training will support both frontline and strategic level staff in understanding homelessness and local government’s role in responding to homelessness, and includes practical activities and examples of what other local government organisations are doing in the space.

While the training packages have been designed to be interactive for any suitable staff to deliver in-house with confidence, Shelter WA recommends that the training is delivered by suitably qualified and experienced staff members.  Where this is not available in-house, Shelter WA can arrange delivery of the training with an experienced and qualified trainer.

Each package contains a slide deck in PowerPoint format, speakers notes, overview video for the trainer and a workbook for each participant. The package will take between 2-3 hours to deliver.  Package One is designed for frontline staff such as parks and gardens, waste management, and rangers and community safety officers, as well as customer service staff at leisure centres and libraries.

Package Two is designed for community development staff and teams involved in urban, strategic or integrated planning.

Both packages contain information about homelessness including definitions and terms, statistics, and information on the systemic and individual drivers of homelessness, and the role and function of local, state and federal government in ending homelessness in WA. The information in each package is then tailored toward front facing or policy and planning roles within Council.

The training packages are available for all local governments to use but are password protected to ensure the integrity of the training.
